Layered Looks For Elegant Windows
70
Whether the style of your home is traditional or contemporary, the window treatments are an essential part of the overall look. Window treatments should complement the style of the room as work as an integral part of your decor, along with contemporary metal wall decor or classic decorative wooden wall panels, for example. Elegant windows create ambiance and add the finishing touches to a space that is stylishly decorated. One major way to create elegant windows is through the use of layered window treatments.
The Effects of Layering
Layering window treatments has the effect of giving depth to a window. The graduation of different types of treatments and fabric draws attention to the window. This is especially advantageous if you want to highlight the architectural details of the window and frame. Adding a valance or cornice to the window in addition to the curtain panels helps conceal unattractive curtain tracks and other hardware. Installing the valance or cornice a little higher over the window, such that the bottom edge just covers the glass, can make the window appear taller.
Usually, layering involves the play of different fabrics and materials against each other. Light and sheer fabrics like silk, lace, and voile are commonly used to enhance elegance against heavier cotton drapes or bamboo blinds. Having more than one window treatment is not only a great way to add different textures to a room, but different colors can be used as well. Repeating the room’s main and accent colors in the drapes, valance, and trim, for example, helps to unify the decor.
Some Window Treatment Combinations
One popular window treatment pairing is sheer curtains with drapes. In the bedroom or living room, plain sheers that extend down the sides of the window and puddle on the floor create a soft, romantic look. Because they do not offer much benefit in keeping the sunlight out or adding privacy, thicker drapes are installed on a second curtain track. These enhance the attractiveness of the décor when the colors are coordinated with those used on the walls and the furnishings.
A reverse pairing works just as well, with shades against the window that block out the light, and sheers added in the front. This combination creates a lighter appearance and works well with sleek contemporary décor. The sheers soften the edges of the windows and add a casual flow to the overall look of the room.
A Roman shade combined with a fabric valance is an ideal treatment for windows with simpler designs. It works well in smaller rooms and with kitchen or bathroom windows. The shade can be mounted inside the frame, such that even when it is rolled down, the trim or molding on the window frame is still visible. When the shade is raised to let in the light, the decorative valance hides it away.
A fancier window treatment combines shades, drapes, and a cornice or valance. It has the benefits of providing added insulation and flexibility in the amount of light and privacy you wish to have in the room. An upholstered cornice adds depth, interest, and elegance to the window treatment and is especially good for large windows and traditional decor.
